Carbon Fiber Tube

Carbon fiber tubes are the basic and daily carbon fiber products in carbon fiber composites. At present, it is mostly produced by rolling process. Different moulds produce pipes of different specifications. Now carbon fiber pipes are widely used in UAVs, brackets, shafts, load-bearing parts, sports equipment and other parts.

Advantages of carbon fiber tube
1. Density: Like other materials, the density of carbon fiber tube is mainly affected by the constituent materials, so the density of carbon fiber tube is mainly determined by its carbon fiber density. The density of common carbon fiber pipes is about 1.7g/cm3, while that of common steel pipes is 7.8g/cm3. The density ratio of the two is 1:4. The weight ratio of carbon fiber pipes and steel pipes with the same strength is 1:43. On the premise of the same strength, the density and weight of carbon fiber tubes are far less than those of steel tubes.
2. Bending shear strength and modulus: The analysis of bending shear modulus of carbon fiber tube is complex, because when the carbon fiber tube itself is subjected to transverse bending, the tube wall will bear the vertical shear stress, which can be decomposed into two shear stresses. Through testing, the theoretical bending shear modulus is 8.63GPa, and the measured value is 8.46GPa, which is in good agreement.
When the carbon fiber tube is bended and sheared, its shear stress is very complex, including not only the tangential shear stress along the tube wall, but also the interlaminar shear stress perpendicular to the tube wall. Theoretically, the shear strength of this carbon fiber tube is 112 MPa, and the actual measured value is 103 MPa, which is also close to the theoretical value.
3. Tensile strength and modulus: the tensile modulus can test the maximum tensile force that the fiber can withstand. Its unit is psi, indicating how many pounds of tensile force can withstand per square inch of area. Carbon fibers with tensile modulus lower than 34.8 million psi will be classified as low modulus carbon fibers. Others include standard modulus, intermediate modulus, high modulus and ultra-high modulus. The tensile elastic modulus of ultra-high modulus carbon fiber is 72.5 million to 145 million psi (500 million to 1 billion kpa). In comparison, the tensile modulus of steel is about 29 million psi (200 million kpa). The elastic modulus of carbon fiber is about 10 times stronger than that of steel, and the weight of steel is 5 times as much as that of carbon fiber. In addition, the fatigue resistance of carbon fiber is superior to other metals. If it is fused with resin, it will become one of the most corrosion resistant materials.
4. Other advantages: In addition to the outstanding advantages of light weight and high strength, the biggest difference between carbon fiber and metal materials is that carbon fiber is a non-metallic material with low electrochemical activity, excellent corrosion resistance and aging resistance, and can extend the service life of carbon fiber tubes. Carbon fiber materials have high working temperature, safe use, and small thermal expansion coefficient, which basically will not deform with the change of working temperature to ensure dimensional stability.
