Carbon fiber's ever-expanding role across diverse industries necessitates meticulous finishing processes. Polishing stands as a critical final manufacturing step, serving dual purposes: it erases imperfections from cutting operations while transforming surfaces into smooth, lustrous finishes. The technique unfolds in two sequential phases.
Rough polishing employs a Grade 0 cast iron disc. Operators hold the workpiece parallel to the disc surface, initiating motion from the center toward the edge with consistently light pressure. As the process concludes, direction reverses-moving from the edge back to the center while gradually easing pressure. This stage relies solely on water cooling without abrasives.
Transitioning to fine polishing demands precision abrasives: specifically, 2.5μm diamond paste or 1μm alumina suspension. These compounds are spread onto woolen felt alongside an emulsifier, followed by polishing at 250 rpm for two to three minutes until all scratches disappear. Immediate post-polishing rinsing is essential to eliminate residual lubricants and abrasives.
Like acrylic and engineered stone, carbon fiber often emerges from fabrication with surface flaws.
