Tape Rolling VS Filament Winding of Carbon Fiber Tubes

Tape Rolling VS Filament Winding of Carbon Fiber Tubes

Carbon fiber is a material that is widely used in various industries due to its high strength-to-weight ratio. It is a form of composite material that is made up of carbon fibers that are tightly woven together. These carbon fibers are extremely strong, lightweight, and have a high tensile strength. They are widely used in motorsport, aerospace, and the military industry. However, the process of making carbon fiber products can be complex, and there are two main methods employed in the production of carbon fiber products: carbon fiber tape rolling method and carbon fiber filament winding method.

Carbon fiber tape rolling production method involves a process whereby thin carbon fiber tape is fed onto a spinning canister, compressed and heated, and then rolled onto a spool. This method is commonly employed in the production of flat parts such as panels, and it is fast and cost-effective. The process also ensures that the carbon fibers are evenly aligned, which is essential for ensuring that the final product is robust and sturdy.

On the other hand, carbon fiber filament winding production method involves weaving carbon fiber filaments into a specific pattern or shape. The pattern may be cylindrical, conical, or any other form that the production process requires. This method is commonly employed in the production of tubular parts such as pipes, rods, or vessels with complex geometries. The process involves a mandrel that rotates at high speeds while the carbon fibers are wound around it to form the final product.

Carbon fiber filament winding method produces stronger components compared to the carbon fiber tape rolling process. This is due to the fact that the fibers are wound in an oriented manner, which ensures that they are strong and able to withstand high pressure and stress. Additionally, the production process involves computer controls which allow for precise control of winding angles and tensions, leading to better consistency and thereby reducing the chances of defects.

In conclusion, both carbon fiber tape rolling method and carbon fiber filament winding method have their advantages and disadvantages. Which method to use when producing carbon fiber products depends on the intended use and the complexity of the product. However, one thing is for sure, carbon fiber products will continue to be in high demand due to their superior strength-to-weight ratio, and carbon fiber tape rolling and filament winding methods will continue to be employed to produce these products.

High Gain produces carbon fiber tubes made by both the tape rolling method and filament winding method with various sizes and lengths. We know the structural layup and hence can produce tubes with better mechanical strength with thinner wall thickness.
