Primary Connection Methods
Adhesive Bonding
Process: Apply structural adhesive to contact surfaces, pressurize, and cure. Surface contaminants must be removed, with chemical etching optionally used to enhance roughness.
Advantages: Ideal for light loads; achieves smooth aerodynamics; bonds dissimilar materials; eliminates galvanic corrosion; provides sealing/damping; high joint efficiency.
Limitations: Non-detachable; adhesive degradation over time; low peel resistance; unsuitable for heavy loads.
Mechanical Fastening
Methods: Threaded connections (bolts, screws, set screws) or riveting.
Advantages: Handles heavy loads; high peel resistance; allows disassembly/reuse; minimal environmental sensitivity; no curing-induced residual stress.
Limitations: Added weight; stress concentration at joints.
Hybrid Joining
Process: Combines adhesive bonding and mechanical fastening.
Advantages: Enhances connection strength and precision.
