Beijing University of Chemical Technology has introduced a new "carbon fiber admission notice" with a thickness of only 0.2 millimeters.
In 2024, the admission notice from Beijing University of Chemical Technology will be made from a carbon fiber composite material described as "as fine as a hair, as light as a feather, as strong as steel, and as precious as gold." According to the university, this admission notice, "woven" from carbon fiber, is produced using a new type of carbon fiber composite material developed by the Advanced Composite Materials Research Center (ACC team) of the School of Materials Science and Engineering at Beijing University of Chemical Technology. With a thickness of only 0.2 mm, it exhibits color changes when viewed at different angles under sunlight, showcasing a unique blend of art and science.
Carbon fiber, known as "black gold" in industry, is characterized by its lightweight, high specific strength, high stiffness, resistance to high temperatures, and corrosion resistance. It has been widely used in major national projects such as launch vehicles, space stations, large aircraft, and large ships.
Before the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, with the support of the National Key R&D Program for "Key Technologies of High-Performance Equipment for Carbon Fiber Composites in Winter Sports," research teams from Beijing University of Chemical Technology collaborated with institutions like the China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology and China FAW to successfully develop the first domestically-produced carbon fiber sled, achieving a breakthrough from 0 to 1. Additionally, during the wheelchair curling competition at the 2022 Beijing Winter Paralympics, the carbon fiber curling pushers used by the Chinese team were also independently developed and designed by Beijing University of Chemical Technology, helping the athletes secure a gold medal in that event.
Yang Xiaoping, Deputy Director of the National Key Laboratory of Organic-Inorganic Composite Materials and Professor at the School of Materials Science and Engineering, stated, "The carbon fiber admission notice not only showcases the university's outstanding capabilities in the field of carbon fiber composites but also represents a successful transformation of domestic carbon fiber composites from 'high-end' products to 'popular' products. This is a vivid example of the university's achievements in scientific research conversion.
