Spanish train manufacturer Talgo has used carbon fiber-reinforced composites to create a chassis frame for high-speed trains that reduces weight by 50%. This weight reduction increases the train's energy efficiency and passenger capacity.
The bogie frame, the second largest structural component of the train, has stringent structural strength requirements. Conventional steel plate welded versions are susceptible to fatigue due to geometry and welding processes. Talgo successfully validated carbon fiber composites as a steel alternative, meeting structural requirements through static, fatigue and non - destructive testing. Hand-laid carbon fiber prepreg was used to meet fire, smoke and toxicity standards while reducing weight.

Developed for the Avril high-speed train, Talgo plans to test the carbon fiber composite bogie frame in real-world conditions for final approval and expand its application to other mass transit vehicles. The reduced weight of the train will reduce energy consumption and track wear. The experience gained from this project will also support new railway standards for the acceptance of composite materials.
