Recycled Carbon Fiber Bipolar Plates Boost Fuel Cell Capacity

Boston Materials and materials specialist Arkema have developed a new 100% recycled carbon fiber bipolar plate that increases fuel cell capacity by 30%.

The innovative product, a ZRT composite film made from 100% recycled carbon fiber, results in a lightweight bipolar plate that meets the cost and weight targets of the hydrogen fuel cell market. These plates significantly increase fuel cell capacity, making hydrogen fuel cells more competitive.

In hydrogen fuel cells, bipolar plates are critical components that allow current to flow through the stack, manage hydrogen and water flow, and maintain structural integrity under high temperatures and corrosive conditions. They account for 80% of the total stack weight. Boston Materials' ZRT composite film plates are over 50% lighter than existing stainless steel plates, directly contributing to a 30% increase in fuel cell capacity.

Boston Materials manufactures ZRT composite foil using patented Z-axis fiber technology. This process utilizes 100% recycled carbon fiber, resulting in an energy efficient product with a low carbon footprint.
