In May 2020, China acquired a soon-to-be-retired international bobsled for reverse engineering. Aerospace engineers identified opportunities to optimize the design using advanced composite materials common in spacecraft.
By 2021, a national task force led by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, combining expertise from China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC) and FAW Group, achieved a historic milestone: the first fully domestic two- and four-person bobsleds. These were delivered to the Winter Sports Administration in September 2021 for Olympic deployment.
The Beijing 2022 bobsleds featured two independently developed modules:
Aerodynamic Composite Body: Designed by CASC's 703 Institute, the low-drag carbon fiber hull utilized T800-grade composites-the same material used in Boeing 787 airframes-with 1/5 the density and twice the strength of steel.
Precision Chassis System: FAW engineered the metallic frame and suspension components for optimal weight distribution and impact absorption.
The T800 carbon fiber construction reduced overall weight by 18% compared to conventional models while enhancing crash safety. Rigorous testing confirmed the hull could withstand 5G impacts without compromising structural integrity, a critical factor in protecting athletes during high-speed crashes. This achievement marked China's entry into the elite club of bobsled-producing nations, blending aerospace innovation with automotive precision for Olympic glory.
