Can Asphalt Pave The Way For Affordable Carbon Fiber?

Heat treatment solutions provider Harper International (Buffalo, New York) has secured a contract to design and manufacture a scientific production line for asphalt-derived carbon pitch-a petroleum byproduct capable of serving as a precursor for carbon fiber. Commissioned by Alberta Innovates, a Canadian research organization based in Edmonton, the facility will be operated by its subsidiary InnoTech Alberta, with equipment delivery and commissioning services scheduled for completion in 2025.

The pilot system will support researchers participating in Alberta Innovates' *Carbon Fiber Grand Challenge*, an initiative aimed at accelerating scalable production methods for both short and continuous carbon fibers derived from asphalt feedstocks. Phase III of the initiative aims to demonstrate repeatable carbon fiber production capabilities, integrate the material into prototypes, and analyze technical-economic factors critical to industrial adoption.

 

"Harper is excited to support Alberta Innovates' Carbon Fiber Grand Challenge through our custom-engineered production line," said Briana Tom, a sales engineer at Harper. "Carbon fibers produced from asphalt precursors could significantly reduce costs while offering a more environmentally sustainable alternative to traditional manufacturing methods."

 

If successful, the project could unlock a new pathway for carbon fiber production, leveraging Alberta's abundant oil sands byproducts. The technology's potential to lower material costs while maintaining performance standards positions it as a promising solution for industries ranging from automotive to aerospace, where lightweight, high-strength composites are increasingly in demand.
