Can Thermoplastic Composites Revolutionize Aerospace Manufacturing?

At a recent U.S. Senate Commerce Committee hearing, Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg and Senator Maria Cantwell spotlighted thermoplastic composites (TPC) as a pivotal technology for aviation's future. The session focused on advancing aerospace innovation and job creation through strategic investments in next-generation materials, with Ortberg declaring TPC "a critical technology frontier worthy of strategic investment" that could streamline aircraft production and deliver "transformative advantages."

Addressing the projected global demand for 40,000 new aircraft, Senator Cantwell stressed the urgency of modernizing manufacturing capabilities: "Failure to prioritize thermoplastic composites risks ceding leadership to international competitors." This technological race impacts both the U.S. aerospace workforce of over 2 million and the nation's global competitiveness. While acknowledging Europe's current lead in TPC development, Ortberg maintained America's position remains recoverable: "We're behind, but not irreversibly so."

The discussion highlighted TPC's potential to replace traditional metal components-a shift requiring revolutionary manufacturing processes and workforce retraining. "Implementing TPC demands entirely new skill sets," Ortberg noted, underscoring the need for specialized training hubs like the AAMMC Tech Center to equip engineers and technicians with cutting-edge expertise.
