The Korea Carbon Industry Promotion Institute (KCIPI), an innovation agency driving the development of South Korea's carbon industry ecosystem through business and research support, recently partnered with Citrine Information to evaluate the effectiveness of an AI-driven approach to developing formulations for carbon fiber processing. This partnership was particularly challenging because the KCIPI team had no prior experience with the specific additives in question, the main equipment for the process was brand new, and there was no historical data available to train the AI model.
Citrine and KCIPI began their collaboration by testing 20 initial formulations. Following these preliminary experiments, they adopted a two-track approach to propose the next set of experiments.
Track 1 involved a traditional R&D approach, while Track 2 utilized the Citrine platform's AI-driven method. The AI-driven approach proved to be significantly more effective, recommending formulations that met the target properties at four times the rate of the traditional R&D approach.
Despite the lack of historical data, KCIPI successfully validated viable additives for carbon fiber production in just five months. Guided by the Citrine platform, the AI-driven approach not only accelerated the development process, but also demonstrated its potential to revolutionize materials science research by suggesting formulations that met the target at four times the speed of traditional R&D processes.
