Teijin's Carbon Fiber Fabrics For Aerospace

Collins aerospace approves teijin's tenax carbon fiber thermoplastic woven fabrics and laminates for mass production of structural components.

 

The Teijin Group recently announced that its Tenax Thermoplastic Woven Fabrics (TPWF) and Tenax Thermoplastic Reinforced Laminates (TPCL) have been approved by Collins Aerospace, a business unit of Raytheon Technologies Corp.

Tenax TPWF is a woven carbon fiber fabric coated with a thermoplastic polymer, while Tenax TPCL is a fully impregnated reinforcement panel consisting of multiple layers of Tenax TPWF.

 

These PEEK polymer-based products, using braided high-strength carbon fibers, offer high heat, impact and fatigue resistance. They can reduce production costs, increase component manufacturing efficiency, and are suitable for additive manufacturing processes. Teijin notes that they're ideal for mass production of components with high mechanical properties, such as aerospace structural parts.

 

Teijin already has a strong relationship with Collins Aerospace. For example, Teijin Carbon America, Inc., a core carbon fiber business of Teijin America, won the Fiber Manufacturer Gold Award for supplying Pyromex, an oxidized polyacrylonitrile fiber for aircraft brake friction materials.

 

As part of its 2020 - 2022 medium-term management plan, Teijin is accelerating the development of aircraft-related mid- to downstream applications, including low-cost carbon fibers and various intermediates. Looking ahead, Teijin aims to strengthen its carbon fiber and intermediate materials business and become a leading supplier of aircraft solutions, with annual sales in this area exceeding $900 million by around 2030.
