
The U.S. Department of Energy recently awarded $2.2 billion to eight transmission and microgrid projects in 18 states to deliver more electricity and strengthen the grid's ability to withstand extreme weather. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm said the grants will add 1,000 miles of transmission lines and 50,000 megawatts of capacity to the grid, "with more to come."

The expansion of the U.S. power grid is expected to require $10 billion in government and private funds. The $2.2 billion grant just announced is part of the U.S. federal government's funding for the power grid. The funding is for power projects that will interconnect regions, connect offshore wind to the grid, help remote areas meet their energy needs, replace power lines with advanced cables, and increase energy storage capabilities.
