Cutting Carbon fiber panel sheets

 

Carbon fiber sheets can be cut with standard tools, from scissors and razor knives to thinner sheets, abrasive cut-off wheels, and Dremel tools. For cutting a lot of carbon fiber veneer, we recommend using carbide tools, abrasive-type cutters, or diamond-crusted tools. Regular steel tools will cut carbon sheets, but because of the abrasive properties of all carbon steel sheets, standard tools will wear quickly with heavy cutting use. The panels can then be sanded down easily.

 

Carbon fiber panel production process

 

The production process of carbon fiber panels mainly includes prefabricated substrates, core material manufacturing, laminating layers, heating, and pressing.

Prefabricated substrates

The substrate of carbon fiber panels usually uses thermosetting resin substrates, such as epoxy resins, unsaturated polyesters, etc. The production process of prefabricated substrates includes: 1) mixing resins, curing agents, and fillers; 2) pouring the mixture into a mold; 3) heating and curing.

Making core materials

The core material is the main structural part of the carbon fiber panel, usually made of foam, wood, or other structural materials. The process of making core materials includes: 1) predicting the size and shape of the core material; 2) using cutting tools to process the core material; 3) applying a thin film on the surface of the core material to prevent the resin from penetrating the core material.

Laminating layer

The laminating layer refers to the layer used to laminate the substrate and the core material, and its material is usually carbon fiber prepreg. This step includes cutting, arranging, bonding, curing, and other processes.

Heating and pressing

Heating and pressing are the last and most important steps in making carbon fiber panels. The molding mold and the carbon fiber panel are placed in a heating furnace together and the temperature is gradually allowed to reach the required hardening temperature. After that, pressing is performed to align the fiber directions of the substrate and the veneer and press them tightly. After that, the mold is removed and the surface is polished and trimmed.

High strength

Since carbon fiber itself has high strength, the strength of carbon fiber panels is also very high. Its breaking strength can reach 300~500MPa or more.
